Concerning Defunct Stock Photo Websites
![]()
Dear Readers: I have used graphics from a variety of stock photo websites during the life of A Little Strength, and over the years several of them have bitten the dust.
The first such website that went belly up on me was Can Stock Photo, and a couple of others have followed suit. What that means, however, is that links in the attributions of pics from such sites would either lead to a polite message about how they have ceased operations, or perhaps to a revamped version of that site I no longer have access to (rather than leading to a specific pic or a specific author's page as expected).
Sometimes the site just went out of business, period. Oh well...sayonara.
On a positive note, sometimes the site would get purchased by a bigger company, but the new owners would go to the trouble of ensuring that all links to previously purchased pics remained valid and arranged for them to lead to the same information at the new site. Hats off to them!
In one especially annoying case, however, the site shut down only to reappear later in a "new" version...but they didn't so much as lift a finger to maintain the validity of links to pics purchased from the previous incarnation of the site. In other words, they just left their old customers (like yours truly) hanging out to dry with a bunch of bad links.
Luckily, none of this has any affect on my right to continue using photos I've purchased from any stock photo website, so there's no need for me to lose any sleep over it. I will retain the legal right to use any such pics indefinitely, no matter what becomes of the site I purchased them from.
It's just that I don't want to have readers innocently clicking on any such bad links and end up wondering what's going on, or thinking something on my site is broken. So, I have gone through my entire website and removed all such invalid links from the pics themselves and the names of the authors, and simply replaced the link to the original site with a link reading "source defunct."
Sigh... Just another one of the joys of running your own website. But defunct stock photo websites notwithstanding...
May God bless you as you enjoy this site,
and thank you for your understanding!
— Greg
